A field is a mapping from a location to a value (or collection of values), e.g. a raster, TIN, interpolated field of point data.
An object is a software representation of a real-world “entity” which has geometry: which may be vector or a patch of raster+location.
Storing a sequence of complete rasters is no problem really, it is not even wasteful as any serious implementation would apply appropriate compression algorithms to remove redundancy.
