Notes:
These are significant data modelling and management issues. The next few slides discuss each in turn.
Note that the most successful OO GIS vendors (Laser-Scan and Smallworld) use internally-developed, special-purpose GIS OODBMSs. 'Generic' OODBMSs such as ObjectStore, Objectivity, Versant, Poet etc. have not been successfully used as the basis of an OO GIS with one exception: Ardent (Unidata), Matra and Dassault are selling GISs based on the French O2 general purpose OODBMS. Ardent have linked with USL's CARIS++ GIS toolkit.
Generic OODBMSs have not been as commercially successful as many had expected. The 'universal server' approach, coupled with implementations over the next 5 years of the partially object-oriented SQL-3 (1998), is likely to be where new technical developments will concentrate.
Thus the use of their own OODBSs by Laser-Scan and Smallworld should not be seen as a disadvantage compared with Ardent for the near or medium term.
